Dr. Ben Goertzel 

Hanson Robotics, Chief Scientific Officer


Ben Goertzel is the Chief Scientist of Hanson Robotics, a Hong Kong robotics company that creates the world’s most advanced humanoid robots. He is also Chief Scientist of Aidyia Limited, a Hong Kong investment management firm using advanced AI for financial prediction; and he serves as Chairman of the Artificial General Intelligence Society, which hosts the annual AGI research conference serie, and the OpenCog Foundation, an organization leading international development of advanced open source AI tools.  Dr. Goertzel is one of the world’s foremost experts in Artificial General Intelligence, a subfield of AI oriented toward creating thinking machines with general cognitive capability at the human level and beyond.  He also has decades of expertise applying AI to practical problems in areas ranging from natural language processing and data mining to robotics, video gaming, national security and bioinformatics.  

In the area of longevity research specifically, he has been the foremost advocate and practitioner of the application of AI technology to the analysis of genomics data regarding longevity.  He has worked with Genescient analyzing the DNA of their long-lived flies, and has worked with LifeCode and MaxLife to design AI-based nutraceuticals combating aging and age-associated disease.  Currently he is leading a team applying OpenCog AI technology to analyze the DNA of supercentenarians and other long-lived humans.

Before relocating to Hong Kong in 2011, Dr. Goertzel held executive roles at AI consulting and product development firms in Washington DC (CEO, Chairman and Chief Scientist at Novamente LLC and Biomind LLC) and New York City (CTO at Webmind Inc.). Prior to that, he served as faculty in mathematics at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, in cognitive science as the University of Western Australia, and in computer science at Waikato University in New Zealand, at the City University of New York and at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.  He has published nearly 20 scientific books and well over 100 scientific research papers. Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and raised mainly in the US, Dr. Goertzel holds a PhD degree in mathematics from Temple University in Philadelphia, USA.

The value of advanced artificial intelligence to help with the quest of understanding the biological underpinnings of aging, and figure out pathways to superlongevity and superabundant health
He will describe work him and others have already done using AI to analyze longevity-related datasets, with exciting results; and will then indicate the kinds of amazingly greater insights that would be expected to emerge from a larger, more comprehensive initiative at AI-based analysis and simulation of the biological underpinnings of aging and health.
