Presentation Summary

Radical inspiration: Nothing to lose, everything to gain. My presentation will focus on ageless living and the radical inspiration it takes to get there. Age and death are the biggest intimidators we face. Society expects you to look and act according to your number, and we have our own personal fears that can crush our spirit and our joy of living. As a co-founder of People Unlimited, the largest regularly meeting community of immoralists in the world, I’ve promoted radical life extension and physical immortality for over fifty years. I’ve faced many challenges, but now more than ever, I realize – we have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Presentation Summary

Nurture your niche: a communication strategy for outliers: We have to communicate to grow, but who do we talk to, and how? Radical life extension advocates are outliers who require distinct strategies for getting their point across. Too often the need for validation trumps the pursuit of real expansion. How can you make the most of your communication both as an individual and an organization? I’m a writer and messaging strategist working in this field for two decades. I’ll share my insights about what works and what doesn’t, and show how mainstream marketing can drain you, while nurturing your niche can lead to unlimited expansion.

Presentation Summary

The Future of Immortality and the Immortality of the Future: Many experts now talk about the four sciences and technologies of the future, which they refer to as NBIC: Nano-Bio-Info-Cogno. Furthermore, the NBIC fields are rapidly converging at an accelerating rate and they will help to transcend many human limitations in order to improve human lives all around the world, and beyond our tiny planet. The NBIC technologies will expand human lives indefinitely and will allow humanity to reach both hardware and software immortality. Humanity is fast approaching what some people call the “Singularity,” the moment when artificial intelligence will reach human intelligence levels, and then quickly overtake it. Perhaps then some humans might become transhumans and posthumans.

Presentation Summary

Aging – The new truth of the impossible cure For all of time, aging has brought the inevitable and unstoppable decay of health. Until very recently, we’ve accepted aging as a natural process beyond the reach of medical intervention. Geriatrics and gerontology barely ameliorate age-related disease, people are kept alive longer but in bad health, and the unsustainable cost of healthcare is escalating to crushing levels. Today cutting edge science promises a tangible path to real cures. Progress in this field is being made at an accelerated, it is just a matter of time until we conquer aging. This talk explores why most humans, still bellieve curing aging is not important or is even a bad idea.

Presentation Summary

Achieve Radical Life Extension by Avoiding the Three Leading Killers: Someone dies of a heart-related event in the United States every 60 seconds making it the leading cause of death. One and a half million people are diagnosed with cancer annually with 600,000 deaths rendering it second. Shockingly, number three is medical care itself - adverse effects from prescription drugs and surgery, hospital-acquired infections and medical errors. Radical life extension is within sight. Prevention and early detection of the first two causes of premature death is neither complex, invasive or unaffordable. Yet the overwhelming majority of people have never undergone the latest diagnostic tests capable of detecting heart disease and cancer at early and almost entirely treatable stages. Simple lifestyle changes can render much conventional medical care unnecessary, helping avoid number three.

Presentation Summary

Replacing old blood plasma with young blood plasma rejuvenates stem cells in the muscle, brain, liver, and other organs. Scientifically proven in mice, and empirically observed in humans, Dr. Kirpov’s group seeks to validate and measure how the “systemic milieu” of blood plasma governs cellular age, discover why, and develop treatment therapies to help a broad range of diseases. Dr. Kiprov’s team was the first in the world to demonstrate that replacing the systemic milieu restores the function of impaired immunocompetent cells in patients with autoimmune diseases. Based on this observation, he developed a model whereby alteration of this systemic milieu (which means removing senescent plasma and replacing it with factors derived from young plasma) may reset the responsible biochemical pathways to their young or old states. Notably, their team was among the first to demonstrate that the removal of inhibitory factors present in old plasma in humans, as in the case of autoimmune diseases, matters as much as the introduction of rejuvenating factors found in the key components of young plasma. These “senile” blood factors effect the root causes of cellular decline such as inflammation, oxidative stress, and immune dysregulation and are responsible for nearly all age-related diseases and conditions from wrinkled skin to cancer. Dr. Kiprov’s team proposes a proof-of-concept study that will seek to induce age reversal in group of older volunteer (human) study subjects. Dr. Maharaj is the principal investigator of an FDA/IND clinical study whereby immune factors from young donors are harvested, the neutrophils are selected, and then infused into advanced cancer patients with the objective of inducing an immune response against the patient’s malignancy. To the best of our knowledge this is the first clinical study using young blood to treat a disease associated with aging i.e. cancer.

Neal VanDeree

Neal VanDeree

Church of Perpetual Life,  Officiator

Bio

Neal's interests and beliefs are that the human species can stop and reverse the aging process. I view it as a disease that we can cure and believe this will come to pass within our life time. The sooner we get this done, the more lives will be saved. In the late 1980's I became interested in the possibilities of extreme longevity and began researching to find other people and groups that were also interested. At that time I had some correspondence with Sir Arthur C. Clarke on the subject and began to fully immerse myself into true science fiction to speculate about some future possibilities for the human race.I discovered Alcor and the concept of Cryonics and thought of myself as an Immortalist since then. Then I met Dr. Aubrey de Grey in 2008 and flew out to LA to assist in any way that I could with his conference: Understanding Aging 2008. Over the years I maintained contact with Dr. de Grey and others that I met and continued research and discussions. In December of 2012 I was introduced to Bill Faloon and began to assist with the creation of The Church of Perpetual Life, the worlds first brick & mortar Transhumanist Church. The Church of Perpetual Life had it's first service in November of 2013 and we have had services ever since. We typically meet on the 4th Thursday of the month. This can vary as we have world-class speakers come and due to scheduling the presentations may be on other days.

Presentation Summary

The Church of Perpetual Life: Neal VanDeRee, will be giving a presentation about this newly created science based church. It is a place that provides fellowship for longevity enthusiasts and a central gathering place for people that are interested in Age Reversal, Cryonics and Artificial Intelligence. It is a place for education and inspiration. The members of Perpetual Life hold faith in the technologies and discoveries of humanity to end aging and defeat involuntary death. Following the prophetic writings of Nikolai Fedorov, church members believe that indefinitely extended healthy life spans are not only desirable and attainable but what humanity is destined to accomplish.

The Neurogenesis Diet and Lifestyle integrates cutting-edge neuroscience research on enhancing cognitive function and extending brain health with a holistic program for increasing your rate of neurogenesis (the rate the brain makes new brain cells.) Research shows that your rate of neurogenesis is the most important biomarker for brain health most people have never heard of. Low rates of neurogenesis are associated with cognitive deficits, memory problems, anxiety, stress and depression. High rates of neurogenesis are associated with the opposite: enhanced cognitive abilities, rapid learning and problem solving, as well as protection against stress, anxiety and depression. Most people can increase their rate of neurogenesis five times or more, with dramatic improvements in their quality of life. The evidence also indicates that this approach to brain health is highly neuroprotective against Alzheimer’s and cognitive decline.

Presentation Summary

What’s the point of living longer if your brain deteriorates? Recent discoveries about neurogenesis (the growth of new brain cells) show the rate of neurogenesis is the most important biomarker for brain health most people have never heard of. Low rates of neurogenesis are associated with cognitive decline, memory problems, anxiety, stress and depression. High rates of neurogenesis show the opposite: cognitive enhancement, rapid learning and protection from anxiety, stress and depression. Most people can increase their rate of neurogenesis five times with dramatic improvements in quality of life. This is the first time this neuroscience research has been gathered in one place to present a practical, holistic approach to diet and lifestyle to increase your rate of neurogenesis and upgrade your brain.

Bio

Dr. Gordon has been a strong advocate of Integrative and Functional Medicine and the promotion of wellness medicine thought the correction of underlying hormonal deficiencies. He was instrumental in promoting the recognition of Traumatic Brain Injury as a cause of hormonal deficiency in the hallmarked presentation on ESPN’s Outside the Lines (Jan. 2007). His book, The Clinical Application of Interventional Medicine (2008), is recognized by his peers as a primer for the standards of care and assessment for Interventional Endocrinology (anti-aging medicine). He holds the position as Voluntary Associate Clinical Professor at the Keck School of Medicine (1998-date) and Medical Director of CBS Studios (2001-date), and has also participated on projects with HBO, ESPN, CNN, FOX, Good Morning, and a number of international news programs. In January 2012, Life Extension Magazine published an article entitled; Health TBI with Hormones. This article launched the recognition of hormones for brain health. Two years later after the success of the LEM article, Dr. Gordon appeared in January 2014 on the Joe Rogan Experience (#438) where the discussion on Traumatic Brain Injury and hormonal dysfunction generated national and international interest. A second Joe Rogan program in November 2014 (#574) included Jason Hall, the screenwriter for American Sniper and ex-petty officer and Navy Seal Corpsman Matthew Gosney who spoke at length about his blast trauma, gunshot wounds, surgery, depression and 16 different medications that did nothing to prevent his attempted suicide in January 2014. He shares his experience of being evaluated by Dr. Gordon and starting a hormonal replenishment protocol that lead to his stopping 14 medications within 6 weeks and the resolution of his deep depression. In February 2015, Dr. Gordon and ex-Navy Corpsman, Jordan Cordova shared his experience of military traumas, hormonal deficiencies and recovery from anxiety and depression on a hormonal protocol. On May 14, 2015, his new book entitled; Traumatic Brain Injury – A clinical approach to diagnosis and treatment, was launched along with a three day workshop attended by an international and national array of medical specialists seeking advanced training in the diagnosis and treatment of TBI. On September 25, 2015, Dr. Gordon and SFC Andrew Marr (ret) were on the Joe Rogan Experience # 700, discussing the benefits of neurosteroids on conditions frequently found associated with TBI and PTSD. Dr. Gordon continues to work with veterans’ groups providing full and partial funding for those with injuries received while in the theater of war.

Presentation Summary

Traumatic Brain Injury in Neuropathophysiology: We talk about quality of health being a major predictor of longevity. The anti-aging movement has been predicated based upon the restoration of hormones that rekindle youthfulness. Aging and genetics were once thought to be the primary causative factor in precipitating hormonal deficiencies. It is now evident that traumas to the head and body can cause a rapid decline in the regulation of these hormones. This presentation promotes the position that trauma begets hormonal deficiencies that affect who and what we are. The mounting number of daily suicides, is a reflection of this condition which curtails longevity.

Kernel, Chief Scientist Officer

Bio

Dr. Randal A. Koene is a neuroscientist and neural engineer with a background in physics and electrical engineering best known for his pioneering efforts toward accomplishing Whole Brain Emulation (WBE), a technology associated with the popular concept of ‘mind uploading’. Dr. Koene is Chief Science Officer of California neural engineering company Kernel, working to commercialize the first cognitive neural prosthesis for memory restoration and enhancement in a partnership with the Berger lab at the University of Southern California. Koene founded the non profit organization carboncopies.org as a nexus for the new professional field of brain emulation research and development, supporting a global network of scientists and engineers. Koene frequently speaks on the topic of Whole Brain Emulation as part of that outreach and project building effort.

Presentation Summary

Scientific implementation that makes mind uploading possible: Mind uploading is often considered the ultimate solution to life extension in that it can preserve and restore life with ample backup and care even in cases of devastating injury or disaster. Mind uploading is also the route towards full self-directed evolution and adaptation to new challenges that our biology did not evolve to cope with. For example, through augmentation we may become able to handle the amount of data that our society currently produces, the size of our new social circles, greater ability for empathy with intelligences of all sorts, integration with machine intelligence, new forms of sensory input, faster thinking, perfect memory, etc. Mind uploading also seeks to make mind independent of a particular implementation substrate (what we call 'Substrate-Independent Minds'), which is very useful when seeking to explore the universe in places that do not happen to be exactly like the Earth environment. The scientific approach to mind uploading is called Whole Brain Emulation, which means collecting data at resolution and scale sufficient to capture functionally relevant aspects of brian from which mind and cognitive functions (including consciousness) emerge, and then using that data in a new functioning implementation, a new brain. There are numerous important questions associated with mind uploading and whole brain emulation, such as technical hurdles to overcome, forms of existence once uploaded (new body, virtual, multiple bodies, etc), and societal questions about self-directed evolution and a proliferation of new choices for mind and body. It is associated with brain preservation, cryonics, brain-machine interfaces and neural prosthesis. There is a network of scientist who are involved in the various technical aspects of the problem, and some of those scientists and their labs have come on-board with the full-scale goal of brain emulation.

Bio

Dr. Nuno is a polymath, a researcher, an entrepreneur, and a life-extension and health-extension advocate. As a polymath, he usually likes to make use of different subject areas, drawing ideas and concepts from different bodies of knowledge to solve specific problems. As an illustrative example, his published papers involve several fields of research, for example: quantitative neuroscience, nanotechnology, robotics, and others. Several previous education experiences have supported and nurtured his polymath approach to problems. As a researcher, he is interested in any scientific, engineering, or technological development with potential applications or consequences for healthy life extension. Along these lines, he is currently focused on developing technologies for human healthy life extension. In business, he created his own company to fund his education. Along the way, several academic awards and grants contributed to his necessary funding strategy. The growth of his original company permitted him to create a group embracing a set of different companies that operate in a large spectrum of business sectors, including: business consulting, education, information technologies, healthcare services, and others. On life extension related topics, early in his life, motivated to take control of his own health he decided to make several courses related to sports and nutrition. For example, he is a swimming teacher, a professional tennis teacher, a body-building and aero-fitness teacher, a power-lifting professor, and he completed also courses in nutrition.

Presentation Summary

The human body contains two main types of information: the human genome and the human connectome. The human genome can now be scanned and stored, as information, in safe repositories, making the loss of personal genetic information virtually impossible. The human connectome, on the other hand, continues to be at permanent risk, becoming irrecoverable if partially or completely destroyed. Nuno will present a future medical technology providing a new method for non-destructively acquiring, transmitting, validating, and archiving comprehensive brain-related structural and functional information. Such person-specific information, once preserved, might subsequently be employed to devise appropriate therapies, and ultimately guide processes designed to restore the original state of the brain that existed prior to its pathological degradation.

Growth Differentiation Factor 11 (GDF11) is a naturally occurring peptide that has been cited in several papers as having an amazing capacity to restore aging muscles, hearts and brains in mice. It has never been tested in humans until Steve Perry became patient zero on June 7, 2014. Steve’s path to GDF11 research started at the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in computer science in 1980. Since then, Steve has founded and sold several software/tech companies including Revelation Technologies (a database company) in 1992, PowerPay Software (a payroll company) in 1998 and CorporateRewards (a web based sales incentive company) in 2012. After 40 years of tech/software development, Steve believes that all complex systems are highly programmed - if not, they fall to chaos quickly. The ultimate complex system, the human body, is highly programmed and aging is no exception. Steve believes that lifespan is programmed by group selection based on resource and environmental selection pressures. Parabiosis strongly suggests that blood borne peptides, especially GDF11, are a key component of the “aging program”. Steve founded GDF11 Rejuvenation, Inc in June, 2014 to explore the efficacy of GDF11 supplementation.

New Model: Designed and Built by People: Models of civilization, their commercial structures and civic processes, are designed and built by people. Products, entertainment, and sports are outcomes of inventiveness. Yet, they are seeded by the necessity of aging. The new model advocates maintaining and safeguarding healthy life as admirable, if not a moral choice. It begins with fact-based optimism. It defends the continuation of life without degeneration. It provides a basis for building knowledge, practice-based innovation, aesthetic sensibility, and mindful intention. Its complex system concerns life—in its many forms. Its societal system targets age-based disabilities, the laws, and right to try pathways of intervention and enhancement in diminishing aging. It is being designed and built by people, seeded by science fact and technological possibility.

Presentation Summary

Why therapies that can add 30 healthy years to the remaining lifespan of typical 60-year-olds may well arrive within the next few decades. It may seem premature to be discussing the comprehensive medical conquest of human aging when so little progress has yet been made in even postponing it. However, two facts undermine this assessment. Firstly, aging happens throughout our lives but only causes ill-health after middle age: this shows that we can postpone that ill-health without knowing how to prevent aging completely, but instead by molecular and cellular repair Secondly, regenerative medicine is now advancing from a futuristic twinkle in a few visionaries' eyes to a realistic strategy for addressing numerous medical conditions. I will explain why therapies that can add 30 healthy years to the remaining lifespan of typical 60-year-olds may well arrive within the next few decades.

Dr. Fahy received his Ph.D. in pharmacology and cryobiology from the Medical College of Georgia in 1977 and worked at the American National Red Cross on kidney banking at cryogenic temperatures (cryopreservation) from 1977-1995. He worked at the Naval Medical Research Institute and served as the Chief Scientist of two biotechnology companies from 1995-1997, until moving to California to join 21st Century Medicine (21CM) in 1998, where he rapidly became the Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) and Vice President of the company. While he is mostly known for his work on fundamental cryobiology and kidney cryopreservation, he has also had a lifelong fascination with the biology of aging, and in 2010 published a multi-authored book called “The Future of Aging: Pathways to Human Life Extension” as the editor-in-chief. In addition to continuing to serve as the CSO of 21CM, Dr. Fahy is currently conducting a human clinical trial of aging reversal based at Stanford University, the focus being on reversal of human immune system aging, which is believed to be a major cause of death and illness in people over the age of 65. Some notable recent accomplishments include publication of the first paper demonstrating survival of a kidney after cooling to -130oC, rewarming, and transplantation; the winning, with coworker Robert McIntyre, of the Small Mammal Brain Preservation Prize; the achievement of institutional and FDA approval for his first human clinical trial; and four months of progress in his clinical trial to date with no serious side effects, and with great enthusiasm on the part of trial volunteers. Future plans include demonstrating greatly improved methods of organ banking, the elimination of human autoimmune disorders, and the elimination of transplant rejection.

Presentation Summary

Intervene Immune is attempting to reverse human Immunological aging (immunosenescence). Immunosenescence is correlated with human mortality and morbidity in old age, but is initiated by the atrophy of your thymus gland near the time of puberty. It is known that thymic atrophy and immunosenescence can be reversed in animals and in young AIDS patients, but this has not been shown in normal aging men and women. We are therefore now carrying out a human aging reversal trial using only FDA-approved agents that in combination should safely regenerate not only the thymus, but also other organs as well. Side effects have been minimal, and subjective responses have been positive. Spinoff applications include elimination of diabetes, other autoimmune diseases, and transplant rejection.

He is a former SEAL, and received his Medical Degree from Bethesda, Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences (USUHS) in 2004. He interned in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Balboa Naval Hospital San Diego in 2005 and subsequently completed a Navy residency in Hyperbarics and Diving Medicine in 2006. Doctor Parsley has been a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine since 2006 and served as Naval Special Warfare’s expert on Sleep Medicine. In addition he is certified in hormonal modulation (Age-Management Medicine). After leaving the Navy he went into concierge medicine and consulting. He continues to consult for multiple corporations, and professional athletes/teams. Doctor Parsley lectures worldwide on sleep, wellness, and hormonal optimization and is currently completing a book on sleep and health optimization. His philosophy for wellness is simple; in order to optimize our health and get the most out of our bodies and minds, we must live more closely to the way we evolved as a species. He believes that many diseases and disorders that we accept as “inevitable” in modern society are unnecessary complications of poor sleeping habits, living in a toxic environment, eating foods we were not designed to digest, and allowing stress to overwhelm us. His passion is to help his patients and clients achieve the highest quality of life possible, and realize their health, performance, and longevity goals. Dr. Parsley spends as much of his spare time as possible with his wife Cindy, and his three beautiful children (Hayden, Cole, and Harper). He has been a competitive athlete his entire life, and enjoys nearly all outdoor activities and sports.

Bio

Molly Sheridan is an ultra-marathon runner and adventurer. As an owner of Desert Sky Adventures, a race management company in Las Vegas, Molly encourages others to walk and run for their health. She also speaks to audiences across the country on her exploits and the benefits of running for health and continues to run adventure races and ultra-marathons around the globe. At 48 years old Molly entered her first marathon. Four weeks into training she injured her foot and was told that she was too old to be running. Taking her own advice, Molly corrected her training, mailed her finish-line picture to the doctor who told her she was old, and decided to challenge herself. As a novice runner, she entered the Rio Del Lago 100-mile Endurance Race. Traversing 100 miles non-stop through northern California, she discovered her love of endurance running, her youthful mind and her adventurous spirit. In the past 7 years, Molly has run over 50 ultramarathons. In 2009, she completed the extreme running event Marathon Des Sables (MDS), a seven-day, 150-mile stage race across the Sahara Desert. Eight weeks later, Molly completed the 135-mile, non-stop, Badwater Ultramarathon. An invitation-only event, Badwater is considered the toughest footrace on the planet. It begins at Badwater, Death Valley, the lowest point in the continental U.S., and ends at Mt. Whitney portal, a 13,000-foot vertical ascent. The documentary “Molly’s Run,” chronicling her Badwater run, for which she received the coveted buckle for finishing under the 48-hour time limit. Molly is the first American woman to attempt and complete La Ultra-The High ultra-marathon, a 138-mile non-stop footrace in the Himalayas. La Ultra begins at 14,000 feet, with climbs to 18,000 feet over two passes. The race culminates in the Morey Plains on the border between China and Pakistan. Presentation Summary

Effective brain rehabilitation strategies in the fields of antiaging and regenerative medicine: Brain trauma from concussive and subconcussive impacts is frequent in professional American football players. We performed an open label pragmatic clinical intervention in 30 retired NFL players who demonstrated significant global hypoperfusion as measured with neuroimaging in addition to clinical impairments in behavior, mood and cognition. This study included the use of multiple interventions that include dietary modifications, nutrient support, neurofeedback and hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Statistically significant improvements were observed across multiple cognitive domains and enhanced perfusion was present in the prefrontal cortex, parietal lobes, occipital lobes, anterior cingulate gyrus and cerebellum. Finding effective brain rehabilitation strategies serve active and retired players but can be applicable to informing research in the fields of antiaging and regenerative medicine.
