Bio

Josh’s primary occupation these days is evolutionary biology. He is a theorist, specializing in computer simulations that demonstrate how natural selection can act on groups and communities. He is affiliated with the EAPS at MIT, but he works on his own. He’s recently completed a book on aging from an evolutionary perspective, and in it he explores the conundrum: if aging destroys our fitness, then why does evolution put up with it? Indeed, why do we have genes whose purpose is to kill us on a schedule? The short answer is that without aging, no one would die until everyone was dying, in an epidemic or a famine. Steady, predictable death rates are necessary to build stable ecosystems. (He welcome your comments on the manuscript — a draft is available here.) More about this on his biology page. Another book, taking a broader cultural and medical view of the subject of aging, is in the works with Dorion Sagan.

Greta jumped into the mind/body arena early on as Co-Author of the book “Cory Everson’s LifeBalance : The Complete Mind/Body Program for a Leaner Body, Better Health and Self-Empowerment” in 1998. As a health authority and personal motivator, she has been seen on morning shows across the country and in appearances on shows ranging from "Entertainment Tonight", “Fox and Friends,” "Good Day LA", and dozens of others. Today she works with top researchers and scientists in a race against time called “The Manhattan Beach Project: NUKE AGING,” a Think Tank of which she was Co-Chair. (www,manhattanbeachproject.com) In 2011 her book, developed by Greta and then co-authored with Michael Fossel, MD, PhD. author of the pivotal 1997 tome “Reversing Human Aging”), and an anti-aging doctor, hit the bookstores and offered solutions based on the emerging field of Telomere Biology. Blackburn feels responsible for the wave of telomere related products and interest, since she brought the Founder of Telomerase Activation Sciences, Inc. to a seminar sponsored by Geron Corp more than a decade ago. Her businessman friend later pursued a licensing agreement with Geron and emerged, with Blackburn’s able assist, with the world’s first commercially available telomerase activator. Greta’s passion remains divided between making the world a more HEALTHY place (by helping with the development of cutting-edge anti-aging products) and making the world a more HAPPY place through showbiz projects and appearances. (She appeared in “The Ice Cream Man Cometh”, an original play that ran in NY at the 13th St. repertory Theatre and she is passionately reviving her one-woman show and blues rock band called Bitch Kitty. Importantly, Blackburn continues to lead the movement to make “100 the New 50” and to promote, incubate and help get funding for emerging technologies and protocols.

Church of Perpetual Life,  Officiator

Bio

Neal's interests and beliefs are that the human species can stop and reverse the aging process. I view it as a disease that we can cure and believe this will come to pass within our life time. The sooner we get this done, the more lives will be saved. In the late 1980's I became interested in the possibilities of extreme longevity and began researching to find other people and groups that were also interested. At that time I had some correspondence with Sir Arthur C. Clarke on the subject and began to fully immerse myself into true science fiction to speculate about some future possibilities for the human race.I discovered Alcor and the concept of Cryonics and thought of myself as an Immortalist since then. Then I met Dr. Aubrey de Grey in 2008 and flew out to LA to assist in any way that I could with his conference: Understanding Aging 2008. Over the years I maintained contact with Dr. de Grey and others that I met and continued research and discussions. In December of 2012 I was introduced to Bill Faloon and began to assist with the creation of The Church of Perpetual Life, the worlds first brick & mortar Transhumanist Church. The Church of Perpetual Life had it's first service in November of 2013 and we have had services ever since. We typically meet on the 4th Thursday of the month. This can vary as we have world-class speakers come and due to scheduling the presentations may be on other days.

Presentation Summary

Tenfold increase in worm longevity: What’s in it for YOU? We reported in 2008 that worms could live 10 times their normal lifespan if they had a severe mutation in the “age-1” gene.  This gene encodes an enzyme responsible for making PIP3, a molecule that tethers many enzymes to the inner cell membrane, where they are poised to interact with other enzymes in the same signaling pathway.  The mutant worms that live extraordinarily long have no detectable PIP3, and most of their signaling pathways are silenced.  This is okay if you are living in a Petri dish with plentiful food and no bacteria or viruses.  But we humans need dividing cells to fight infections, and one of the silenced pathways is needed for cell division!  How could we benefit from what we found in the longest-lived mutants ever discovered, without being ravaged by diseases (or becoming worms)?  We decided to look beyond the mutated gene, to learn which proteins depend on its product, PIP3.  Using an approach that combines proteomics and genetics, we discovered 81 proteins that have to bind PIP3 to do their jobs properly.  We tested the effect of “knocking down” 6 of those, and confirmed that for at least 5 of them, worms with less of that protein lived longer and resisted stresses better.  So we think we have developed a novel method to discover new drug targets that together should extend human lifespan (maybe 10-fold, probably something a bit less dramatic!), while avoiding the unpleasant consequences of halting cell division.
